I love me some Janelle Monae, her acting chops are on point, she is a dope artist, she is beautiful and sweet in person, but you know what else I love… Sex.
“People have to start respecting the vagina. Until every man is fighting for our rights, we should consider stopping having sex. I love men. But evil men? I will not tolerate that. You don’t deserve to be in my presence. If you’re going to own this world and this is how you’re going to rule this world, I am not going to contribute anymore until you change it. We have to realize our power and our magic. Because I am all about black-girl magic, even though I’m standing with all women. But this year? This year, I am so carefree black girl.” –Janelle Monae
Grant it folks that are in my close circle know that it has been waaaaaay too long since I’ve indulged, however, sex is good and can be an act of self-care, a way to foster intimacy, a stress reducer, exercise, good for the soul, and the list goes on. The benefits are real and not something to forgo as a bargaining tool or to use as a weapon. We are sexual beings fighting for reproductive health care and equal rights. While I’d like to think the homie in my heads words were taken out of context or simply not expressed as she was thinking it in her head it a hard pill to swallow listening to our sistren make references to our bodies as a commodity.
Two major things sis forgot to consider when she made this statement is that
- Not every woman who’s rights needs to be protected has a vagina or sleeps with men
- Women enjoy and love sex so this would be hurting those who sleep with men as well.
Her statement did have something that I think we can all agree on and that’s leaving the evil men alone. What do you think, was she on to something and I missed it?
