Age: 29
Noire Care practice: Yoga, Bellydancing, Fitness, Crafting, Bubble Baths and Prayer
How long have you been practicing? Yoga, Bellydance, Fitness- 5 years, Crafting, Bubble Baths and Prayer- 3 years
Who or what introduced you to it? I saw an advertisement for a nearby yoga studio that offered yoga and bellydance. I began my fitness journey after watching all of the Black Girl Magic tearing up the 2012 Olympics
The stress of grads school lead me to incorporating craft classes, daily bubble baths and the development of my spirituality.
What is the best way for a beginner to get started?
Beginners should take a moment to themselves. A real moment free of other voices. It is crucial for people to find their own voice and listen for cues to what makes their heart sing. “What brings you absolute joy?”
Are there low/no cost ways to getting started?
Self-care can begin free at home. Stealing time away to curl up with a good book, study a recipe, draw a luxurious bubble bath or a quiet corner for prayer and meditation. There are plenty of Youtube videos that offer yoga and meditation classes where the only thing needed is a strong internet connection.
Also if taking classes is your thing check out discount sites like lifebooker (unfortunately shutting down), groupon, living social. Many yoga studios provide a free first class or a generous new student trial. Food box companies like Blue Apron and Hello Fresh allows you to have a free first meal. Also check out special days for discounted services at the spa or nail salon.
What kind of personality do you think benefits from this type of practice?
A woman who is looking to invigorate their inner goddess. After all, a woman with an increased sense of self can take on the world!
How often do you practice? Weekly
Where do you practice? Yoga studios, fitness studios, local craft classes and of course my home.
Is this something you can enjoy with others or do you prefer the solitude? While solitude would be my first choice. I love to travel with others. They create a richer experience.
How does this practice make you better? Mentality I am stronger than I have ever been. I grew up insecure and shy and each day I chip away at those layers and morph into something even more beautiful.
Did you grow up witnessing your mother, aunties or any women in your life consistently taking time to do something just for them? Absolutely not! I believe that they would have been healthier today had they incorporated a little more self-love in their lives. I am the exact opposite. I am constantly working on my queendom.
What would you want your future daughters or nieces to have learned from you about self care?
I would love for her or them to realize that if you do not take care of home (your body, your mind, your spirit) you would not be of good use to anyone else. You must stand firm first then share your gifts with the world.
